Top seeds Marjolein Buis and Diede de Groot will play Sabine Ellerbrock and Aniek van Koot in Sunday’s women’s final at the 2017 UNIQLO Wheelchair Doubles Masters in Bemmel, Netherlands after two entertaining semifinals on Saturday at Sportcentrum Schaapskooi.
The final will be a rematch of Ellerbrock and van Koot’s first ever match as a double partnership earlier this week in Bemmel – a contest that Buis and de Groot won 61 64.
Saturday’s first semifinal saw Ellerbrock and van Koot gain consecutive breaks midway through the opening set against second seeds Dana Matheswon and Lucy Shuker as they earned a narrow advantage and they wrapped up a 63 64 victory by taking the last three games of the match after an hour and 40 minutes.
“It’s been a lot of fun, I think our games fit pretty good together,” said Germany’s Ellerbrock of her newly-established partnership with van Koot. “Aniek’s making a lot of pressure from the baseline and that gives me the option to go to the net. I’ve really enjoyed the week so far.
“I’ve been to the Doubles Masters final before with KG (Montjane). The first match me and Aniek ever played together was against Diede and Marjolein here on Thursday so we had to find the right positioning and now I think we know how we have to play, so they have all the pressure.”
Van Koot said: I think it was a very solid performance today. We had confidence in each other and every game we play we get a bit more rhythm so that really helps us a lot. I think Dana and Lucy played really well but I also think we had a really good tactic.
“We went a break down at the start but we relaxed each other, we calmed each other down and we had some solid games after that.”
Rio Paralympic silver medallists Buis and de Groot had to refocus their efforts in the other semifinal against Charlotte Famin of France and South Africa’s Montjane after dropping the second set. Famin and Montjane created three set point opportunities before finally forcing a deciding set.
After falling a break behind in the final set Famin and Montjane then led the seventh game of the set 40-0 to have three opportunities to reduce their deficit to 4-3. However, they were unable to take their chances and Buis and de Groot opened up a 5-2 lead before Famin put a forehand into the net to give the top seeds a 62 57 62 victory.
“I would not say we were worried after the second set but we did think we needed to change things to eventually win and we needed to do that before we continued. We tried to make more pressure. I think we were standing still a lot so we tried to move more and get some rhythm,” said Buis.
“Tomorrow we are going to have to play as well as we did against Aniek and Sabine the other day and we played really well then.”
